It’s still technically Thanksgiving weekend, so I can do this. I wasn’t feeling the thankfulness on the actual day, but now I’d like to extend it outwards in a radiant pattern. (shield your eyes.)
I’m thankful for my sister and mother, for being supportive of the comic when I wasn’t sure how they’d react. I’m thankful for the people who have read it and said good things about it, which so far has been everyone who’s said anything. I’m thankful for webcomic artists who take interest in their audience and make it feel like they’ve really forged a connection. I’m thankful for the expertise from Webcomics.com, a great resource for those getting started as well as those who need a refresher on the basics. And I’d also like to thank one Joe Hills, whose enthusiasm for the medium inspired me to create Wighthouse in the first place. (he also unwittingly gave Wighthouse its name as a joke. that’ll learn ‘im.)
Whew! Glad to get that out of the way. Now back to crapping all over everybody for another year.
Okay. This is my first attempt at a pure blog post on this site. I figured if there were any place for a blog about another webcomic, it’d be…my own webcomic. Yeah.
David Malki ! has put out a call to bloggers to write a post about his strip Wondermark. I’d heard of Wondermark for a few months, mostly through his association with Kris Straub via Tweet Me Harder. I then saw Malki ! in person at SPX in September. Despite not being a reader (yet), I squashed any potential embarrassment and introduced myself. Naturally he was a very tall man. Nice, too.
Upon returning to my life of quiet drudgery, my curiosity resurfaced. Armed with a fistful of new webcomics to peruse, I set my sights on Wondermark once and for all. What follows is a paean to the strip itself, so be warned:
I didn’t realize it when I wrote this little arc, but I neglected to mention the name of Daniel’s fellow bartender. It’s Jake. I could have stuck it in somewhere, but it felt forced. (sigh…yes, that’s what she said.)
What? You thought this comic was just going to be about nifty buildings? Have a nice healthy plot injection, on me.
There’s a lot to love about Chicago architecture. There’s also a lot to angry up the blood. I wanted to inject a little of both aspects into this here comic of mine. The intention for this strip was to pick several buildings that even out-of-towners could recognize, or at least be interested in. Rumor has it some band or another put the Marina Towers on some album of theirs. Go figure.
The important thing is, he got it back, right?
What will happen to our fair hero next? Is he even our hero? Also, what games does he have? Stay tuned…
