When I found out the current Chicago Federal Plaza was once home to this building, I pretty much thought it was a joke. I can’t fathom putting those faceless monoliths in place of a place that radiated grandeur and authority like that. But hey, that’s me. You don’t agree? Start your own webcomic. :)
(The title is a reference to this book about Richard Nickel, a preservationist in Chicago in the ’60s. He died while trying to save material from the demolished Chicago Stock Exchange. My small tribute.)
The grand, inaugural show I’ve been waiting for for months is now at a close. I am in mourning. From what I’ve read, the show was enjoyable, at least for those exhibiting, within whose ranks I humbly toiled. Read on for my takes on C2E2 from both a fan and an exhibitor’s point of view.
If you know not to what the title refers, wonder no more. It is truly mind-blowing.
The first incidence of C2E2 is now a thing of the past. Much was learned, much info has yet to be parsed, much sleep needs to be had. Look for a post detailing my experiences in the next couple of days. Short answer: Squee!
I really need to see 2001 again. In other news, I dislike po-mo architecture. I respect that it’s efficient and has advantages over older, bulkier, more intricate designs. But cripes, are the buildings ugly. To me, they really do resemble alien life forms, gleaming with some hidden intelligence known only to themselves. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate on everything that’s glass and steel. If all you have to offer is a glorified box, though, I shall pass.
More importantly, there’s only one day until C2E2! I’m super, super excited. I never dreamed I’d be behind a table at this point in a webcomic’s lifespan (i.e. infancy) but thanks to Joe Hills and, unfortunately, his partner Art Frederick’s inability to attend, I’ve got the opportunity to be on the other side of convention goings-on. This is C2E2′s inaugural year; I sure hope it’ll be up to snuff.
Anyway, get yer butt on down to McCormick Place for the next one, two or three days and see us at booth WC-R! And check out who all’s coming! Tons of webcomic artists, including 3/4 of Halfpixel, David Malki ! (from whom I won that wonderful book a few months back), Randy Milholland, Danielle Corsetto, Gordon McAlpin, tons more I know I’m forgetting.. also! Ghost Hunters!! You can bet your arse I’ll be checking that out! :D
Remember, this weekend I’ll be at McCormick Place for C2E2! Joe Hills of Team Snow Day and I will be kickin’ it old school at booth WC-R! (It’s a webcomics thang.) (They’ve corralled us all together for easy extermination) Drop on by!
Concerning “Grosse Point” in the first panel, that’s the Chicagoland area’s “other” lighthouse, located in Evanston. It too is venerated, a national landmark, blah blah blah. In my opinion it’s not nearly as nice or unique as the CHL, so eff that noise. Word.
Also, next weekend is the first occurrence of the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, of which I will be a part! I’ll be helping Joe Hills of Team Snow Day fame (Jacq of All Blades) hawk his fabulous wares at booth WC-R! Come on out!
Welcome to chapter two of Wighthouse, the second-most chapter there is!
A little background: the San Diego is a play on the Santa Fe building, where the Chicago Architecture Foundation maintains its headquarters. You’ll notice Daniel works not for the CAF, but for Windy City Architecture, for two reasons: 1. I’m unsure of the sueability of using the CAF in the strip, and 2. CAF’s docents don’t get paid. Sure, he inherited a bunch of stuff, but the guy still needs some steady scratch.
Thus concludes my foray into the tempestuous world of webcomics. You’ve been a great audience. Goodnight!
/lamest April Fool’s joke ever
Serieusement, I’m glad for the first chapter to be over and am looking forward to what lies ahead. You’ve got as good an idea as I do what’s next. That’s the exciting part, no?
