It has been rather a long time since Daniel’s done any architecture tours, hasn’t it? Maybe “love” is too strong a word, but he does hold a certain fondness for the city as a whole, and introducing its beauty to the worthy. Along those lines, Blair Kamin of the Chicago Tribune noted yesterday that the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust will be running 30-45 minute tours of the amazing Rookery downtown, a building that (besides going to the Potbelly ensconced within) I have yet to fully appreciate. Starting Friday, the 30-minute tours are free; the 45-minute ones cost $10 to be able to stand in the same room where Daniel Burnham (D’s namesake) and John Root dreamed up so many fantastic edifices. That’s a sawbuck with which I’d gladly part.
In case you were none the wiser, Wighthouse has its own Facebook page now! Please take a moment to become a part of it. I also plan on installing one o’ them “like” buttons sometimes soon, so keep your eyes peeled.
I’ve always considered (and I know I’m not alone) the week between Christmas and New Year’s to be a temporal no-man’s land, a nadir of productivity. As such, I’ll be taking a small vacation; updates will continue on January 3rd. In the meantime, feel free to peruse my blog backlog (taking in this post if you’re still in the holiday spirit!), bum around the archives, or recommend Wighthouse to a friend. :) Happy holidays!
Since the current storyline doesn’t really allow for an inline Christmas update, I went ahead and drew a little scene portraying the Wachter family in a previous incarnation.

Those of you who remember this strip might already know what’s in that big package in front. :)
One Mr. Art Frederick (of Jacq of All Blades fame) brought the following to my attention:
Extremely cold temperatures caused the crashing waves from Lake Erie to freeze on the surface of the Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse forming a bizarre structure – much like a sand castle.
The Flickr account tells a story in pictures, showing something akin to a child’s faraway dream. Compare those pics to these and you begin to see the extent of metamorphosis. Cleveland has really been hit hard so far this winter, and this lighthouse is no different. I’m not saying that the CHL has ever been iced over like this, but who knows what Chicago winters can bring?
